Our visit to Konak, Part One: Turquoise tiled mosque

Tuesday we had a family outing despite the very hot weather and crossed the bay to reach one of the historical parts of town, called Konak (meaning large home in Turkish). I've heard there used to be (sadly) many beautiful two-story homes here occupied mostly by the Italians and French during the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. So that's why this now modern and busy hubs name has stayed Konak. Luckily this lovely extremely miniature of a mosque still decorates the Konak Square:

The entrance door...Love the turquoise tiles, contrasting with the pure white marble!
Have you ever heard of Iznik or Kutahya tiles? Well all these tiles decorating the building here are all original and eventually very precious...
Another interesting fact: The structure is an octogon, a very rarely used shape when it comes to mosques...

The best part...The mosque is still in use today, despite it's tiny size!

Learn more about this historical building here.

All in all, we visited far tooo many places on Tuesday to put in just one post...I'll be back with more pictures this week, so don't forget to stop by often...
